Exploring the South Shore with kids? You’re in for a treat. Nova Scotia’s South Shore (from White Point to Port Mouton) is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also brimming with activities that families love. In this post, we highlight fun things to do with kids in the area – from beach days and outdoor explorations to unique local experiences that will engage young minds. Plus, learn how Sidanna Retreat’s services and partnerships make family adventures a breeze to plan.

Beach Bliss for All Ages

The South Shore’s beaches are nature’s playgrounds.

Summerville Beach tops the list for families – its long stretch of soft white sand and shallow, gentle waves are perfect for kids to splash and play. Bring your own buckets and shovels for sandcastle building or see who can collect the most interesting shells.

Just down the road, Hunts Point Beach offers another safe spot for swimming, with picnic tables and shade nearby for when little ones (or parents) need a break from the sun.

Don’t miss Carter’s Beach in Port Mouton on a calm day – its crystal-clear shallows form tidal pools that toddlers love to explore (you might spot tiny crabs or minnows!). Keep in mind there are no lifeguards on these provincial beaches, so parents should stay vigilant, but the water in summer can be surprisingly warm and welcoming.

After a salty day by the sea, what better way to unwind than back at your Sidanna Retreat rental for a barbecue dinner and an evening bonfire?

Easy Nature Walks & Wildlife Spotting

Children are natural explorers, and the South Shore’s gentle nature trails offer the perfect setting for discovery. One family favorite is the Beach Meadows Coastal Trail near Brooklyn (just outside Liverpool). This easy, stroller-friendly path winds through coastal forest and along the shore, with plenty of opportunities to spot birds and maybe even a seal offshore.

For something a bit more adventurous, try the short Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct trail to Harbour Rocks – it’s about 1.5 km one-way over mostly flat terrain to a viewing platform where you might see seals basking on rocks. The reward is big views for relatively little effort, and kids get a kick out of using binoculars to watch wildlife.

Another fun stop is the Cosby’s Garden Sculpture Park in Liverpool. It’s not a hike per se, but wandering the paths here feels like a whimsical nature walk – larger-than-life concrete sculptures of creatures and mythical beings are tucked among the trees and gardens. Young kids find it magical, and there’s room to run and play hide-and-seek with the art. It’s a great way to combine culture and outdoors, and admission is by donation.

Dip into History & Culture

Mix a little learning into your vacation by exploring the South Shore’s kid-friendly historical sites.

Queens County Museum in Liverpool has exhibits on privateering (legal pirates!) and local Mi’kmaq history; they often have scavenger hunts or old-fashioned games that kids can try. Right next door is the Perkins House Museum, a preserved 18th-century house where guides in costume show how families lived 200 years ago – a real eye-opener for gadget-loving youngsters.

If your children are intrigued by lighthouses, head to Fort Point Lighthouse in Lahave. It’s a petite lighthouse that you can actually go inside, complete with a lightkeeper’s kitchen set up as it was in the 1800s. Kids can try on a sou’wester hat and pretend to send Morse code signals. The grassy grounds are perfect for a picnic, and there’s an ice cream parlour a two-minute walk away (a sweet reward for curious minds!). Also consider a short ferry ride: the Lahave cable ferry carries cars and passengers across the Lahave River – it’s only a 5-minute trip, but for little ones it’s an adventure to ride a “boat car”, and you can use it to visit Lunenburg or other sights on the opposite side.

Outdoor Sports & Active Fun

Keeping active kids busy is easy on the South Shore. Liverpool Adventure Outfitters offers family-friendly kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals, as well as guided tours tailored to beginners. Consider booking a calm morning paddle on the Mersey River estuary – it’s sheltered and scenic, and you might see herons or eagles. Children as young as 5 or 6 (accompanied by parents) can ride in a tandem kayak. Sidanna’s concierge can help schedule a private guide so you can go at your own family’s pace.

For kids who love wheels, bring or rent bicycles to enjoy sections of the Rum Runners Trail. One easy segment is from Liverpool’s waterfront through Pine Grove Park – it’s short, flat, and ends at a playground, which is perfect motivation for young cyclists. If visiting in winter, don’t underestimate the fun of a coastal winter experience: bundle up for a beach walk where you might see ice formations on the sand, then warm up with hot cocoa back at your vacation rental.

Unique Adventures & Memories

Peter Lavender Fishing Guide (photo credit - Sidanna Retreat)

One of the most memorable family adventures on the South Shore combines nature with a dash of adrenaline: a family fishing trip. As mentioned in our region guide, Sidanna can book you a half-day on the water with Peter Lavender, an experienced local fishing guide. This isn’t hardcore sport fishing – it’s tailored for fun. Peter provides all the gear and patiently teaches kids how to jig for mackerel or cast for bass. Children absolutely light up reeling in a wriggling fish (and don’t worry – catch and release is an option if you’re not up for fish dinner). It’s both a hands-on ecology lesson and a confidence-building experience for kids. Plus, who can resist the bragging rights of “I caught a fish as big as my arm!”?

If visiting in August, check out the Clarke’s Harbour Sandcastle Competition at Clam Harbour Beach (a bit of a drive, but a famous annual event) or closer to home, local festivals like Liverpool’s Privateer Days, which often have family activities, pirate reenactors, and even cardboard boat races. These community events immerse your family in local culture and are just plain fun.

At the end of each action-packed day, your Sidanna Retreat awaits with family-friendly amenities. Many properties have board games and smart TVs for movie nights. A highlight for kids (and parents!) is often the private hot tub – imagine a pre-bedtime soak with the family, recounting the day’s adventures while the ocean breeze rustles nearby trees. These little moments of togetherness, facilitated by a comfortable home base, are what turn a good family vacation into a truly unforgettable one.

In short, Nova Scotia’s South Shore offers families a wonderful mix of relaxation and adventure. From building sandcastles on white sandy beaches to kayaking with seals and exploring lighthouses, both kids and parents will find plenty to love. With Sidanna Retreat’s concierge ready to handle the details – be it grocery delivery, or tour bookings with trusted operators – you can focus on what matters most: making memories with your loved ones.
