Nova Scotia’s South Shore is a water lover’s paradise. With the Atlantic Ocean at your doorstep and numerous rivers, bays, and coves to explore, there’s no shortage of ways to get wet and have a blast. In this blog post, we dive into the top water-based adventures in the South Shore region (White Point to Port Mouton), from sea kayaking and surfing to thrilling shark encounters. Whether you’re a seasoned aqua-adventurer or a curious beginner, you’ll find an experience that floats your boat. And thanks to Sidanna Retreat’s local partnerships and concierge services, gearing up for these adventures is smooth sailing!

Paddle Power: Sea Kayaking & SUP

One of the best ways to experience the South Shore’s beauty is right at sea level, with a paddle in hand. Sea kayaking offers an intimate encounter with the ocean’s tranquility (and sometimes its excitement!). In Liverpool and surrounding areas, Liverpool Adventure Outfitters is the go-to for guided kayak tours and rentals. They offer half-day and full-day excursions that explore scenic bays, hidden inlets, and even nearby islands. Imagine gliding over clear water as jellyfish pulse beneath you, or pausing your kayak to watch a family of seals curiously pop up their heads. Experienced guides ensure safety and fun – no prior experience is required for most tours, making it perfect for newbies and families alike. Sidanna can reserve a private kayaking tour tailored to your group’s skill level, or even arrange a twilight paddle where you might witness a spectacular sunset from the water.

If you prefer a board to a boat, try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP). The gentle coves around Summerville and Port Mouton are excellent for SUP, especially on calm mornings.

Summerville Beach often has sections of shallow, warm water behind sandbars – an ideal practice area to get your balance. Some local outfitters (Liverpool Adventure Outfitters included) rent SUPs by the hour. It’s a fantastic core workout and a serene way to explore, giving you a vantage point to peer down into the clear shallows at starfish and sand dollars.

If you’re up for a fun challenge, see if Sidanna’s concierge can organize a SUP lesson or even a yoga on SUP session – yes, that’s a thing here, and there’s nothing quite like doing a warrior pose while floating gently on the Atlantic!

Surf’s Up (South Shore Style)

When people think of surfing in Canada, they might not immediately picture Nova Scotia – but the province has a passionate surf scene, and the South Shore boasts a couple of surf spots that cater to all levels.

White Point Beach near Hunts Point can deliver nice rolling waves on a good day, suitable for longboarding or beginner lessons. In fact, during summer months, White Point Beach Resort often partners with local instructors to offer surfing lessons to guests and visitors. They provide wetsuits, boards, and basic training on land before getting you out to catch some whitewater waves. It’s an awesome feeling to stand up on your first ride, even if it’s just for a few seconds!

Another surf locale is Western Head (just south of Liverpool). This exposed point break can produce quality waves when the swell and winds align. It’s more popular with experienced local surfers – if you’re a confident surfer traveling here, you might want to check it out or chat with the folks at Liverpool Adventure Outfitters for the inside scoop on conditions. For beginners, sticking with lessons at White Point or Martinique Beach (about 1.5 hours east, but one of Nova Scotia’s top surf beaches) is the way to go.

Sidanna Retreat can arrange surfing outings for you, including transport and gear rental, so you can focus on enjoying the ride. Don’t worry about bringing a wetsuit – local surf schools have warm 4/3 suits that will keep you comfortable even in the Atlantic’s cool waters.

Reel Thrills: Fishing & Shark Expeditions

If your idea of water adventure involves fins and gills (on the fish, not on you!), the South Shore has you covered. Deep-sea fishing charters operate out of ports like Liverpool, Shelburne, and Lockeport. Lunenburg Ocean Adventures is highly accessible, operating out of the Lunenburg Waterfront, near the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

These crewed boats take you offshore for an exciting day of angling. You could find yourself fighting a feisty pollock or mackerel, or even hooking into a big one – bluefin tuna migrate through Nova Scotian waters in late summer, and while specialized tuna charters leave from the Northumberland side, you never know what might tug your line out here. Charters usually provide all gear and happily teach newbies, making it accessible fun.

Sidanna’s concierge keeps a list of family-friendly fishing charters, so if you’d like to take the kids out for their first ocean catch, just say the word.

Atlantic Shark Expeditions (photo credit)

For a truly unique adrenaline rush, consider a shark expedition. Yes, sharks! Nova Scotia is one of the few places in the world where you can go shark cage diving in the wild. Atlantic Shark Expeditions, founded by a marine biologist, offers day trips that let participants view and even snorkel with Blue Sharks and other species in the open ocean. These aren’t the fearsome man-eaters of Hollywood lore – Blue Sharks are curious and relatively gentle, but still, being face-to-face with one from the safety of a cage is unforgettable. If jumping in the water isn’t your thing, you can opt to stay aboard and watch from the deck as the sharks swim up (often within arm’s reach of the boat).

The crew engages in ethical catch-and-release research, sometimes tagging the sharks for science, and you get to be part of that action. It’s both thrilling and meaningful, since you’re helping research by just participating. Keep in mind this is a full-day adventure and best for adults or older teens; seasickness can be an issue for some, so take precautions.

Sidanna can assist in booking this ultimate adventure, including arranging transport to the launch point (which is usually on the province’s southwest shore, a couple hours from the cottages).

Prefer something a little tamer but still want bragging rights? Try a shark fishing charter with Blue Shark Charters out of Halifax or Eastern Passage. They specialize in catch-and-release big-game fishing – you’ll head out on a sport fishing boat and have a chance to reel in a Blue Shark (which can be 8-10 feet long!). Don’t worry, you’re not on the menu; the crew handles the shark carefully alongside the boat, you get a quick photo, and the shark swims away unharmed. It’s high excitement when that rod bends and line starts peeling off the reel! Blue Shark Charters is a professional outfit with years of experience, making safety and education a priority – they love sharing facts about the marine ecosystem with guests. This kind of trip is great for a group of friends looking for a bonding adventure on the water.

Sailing & Scenic Boat Tours

Not every water adventure needs to get your heart racing – some are simply about enjoying the ride. Along the South Shore, you can find scenic boat tours that showcase the coastline’s beauty from the best vantage point: the ocean.

Closer to Bridgewater, Bridgewater Boat Tours provides a different kind of water adventure – a calm LaHave River cruise. Aboard their comfortable 28-foot boat, you can take a guided tour along the tidal river, spotting eagles, osprey, and historic landmarks. They even offer kayak and paddleboard rentals if you’d like to explore the river at your own pace. This is perfect for those who want a gentler adventure or have younger children in tow. The river’s scenery is gorgeous, especially in the evening when the sun sets and mirrors off the water’s surface. Bridgewater Boat Tours launches from the Lighthouse Motel docks, making it easy to find. Sidanna can book tickets for a family-friendly afternoon cruise or a sunset charter – the latter often includes a little picnic of local cheese and fruit to enjoy on board.

Making a Splash with Sidanna: Plan with Ease

Sidanna Retreat aims to make every aspect of your stay enjoyable, and that extends to water adventures too. Through our concierge and local partners, we can coordinate all the details of the activities mentioned. Want to kayak one day, surf the next, and fish the day after? We’ll line it up, create an itinerary (with weather backup plans), and handle all the bookings. Our team keeps tabs on trusted operators like Liverpool Adventure Outfitters, Blue Shark Charters, Bridgewater Boat Tours, and Atlantic Shark Expeditions, so you get reputable guides who prioritize safety and fun. We can even arrange for guides to pick you up right at your cottage for certain trips, or provide coolers, snacks, and other essentials you might need for a day on the water.

Worried about gear? Don’t be. Need wetsuits, fishing rods, or extra beach towels? We’ve got you covered – either through our properties or the operators. For instance, surf and SUP lessons include all equipment; kayaking tours provide lifejackets and dry bags; fishing charters supply rods and tackle.

Perhaps the best part: after each watery excursion, you return to the comfort of your Sidanna rental. We know how nice it is to warm up after a cool dip, so lots of our homes have hot tubs, saunas, or big bathtubs – ideal for soaking sore muscles or simply relaxing. We can even arrange a post-adventure treat like a massage therapist to come by and work out the kinks after a strenuous day of surfing or paddling. Talk about service!
